Most Millennium Greens began with a close association with their Local Authorities. The majority of Greens have their local authority as their landowner, and have a 999 year lease; this automatically gives the local authority some connection to the Green. The initial grant from the Countryside Commission was matched funding and most Greens got the majority of their funding to match from their local authority. Today many Millennium Greens maintain a constructive relationship with their local authority, contacting it for advice and information etc.

Replacing the Trustees with Local Authority Trustees[]

Within a few years it became apparent that some Greens would not be able to replace their trustees with volunteers from their community and to release them legislation was put in place so that Natural England, the successor to the Countryside Agency, could administer the creation of trustees within the relevant local authority so that the authority can run the Green whilst maintaining the trust.
